Marvel's Ultimate Line Include Free Downloads

The strategy basically amounts to ‘buy it on paper, get it on your iPad,’ and now DC’s crosstown rivals at Marvel have announced that they’ll be initiating a similar strategy for their Ultimate Comics line. You’ve been able to buy digital copies of many Marvel books on the same day of release of the print versions for a while now, but you’ve had to decide between one version or another. This new Ultimate development lets consumers have both in one shot. An interview by David Brothers at Comics Alliance gets into the specifics and notes one important difference between DC and Marvel’s pricing. DC’s digital titles drop down in price after a month but Marvel’s rep says they have no plans for that present. As disparaging as some gamers may be to titles released for mobile and tablets, content deals like this make devices like the iPad, Kindle Fire or Nook Color more attractive than a 3DS or PSP. Head on over to Comics Alliance for the full interview.

Eric Powell Illustrates Huck Finn

CBR spoke to Eric Powell about his upcoming work illustrating Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. Here’s an excerpt:
I see. You're adding illustrations to the novel, rather than adapting it as a comic. Why take this approach?
Well, that's what was suggested to me by Chris. If he had said a comic, I would have just said no. Too much work. My schedule is pretty busy with "The Goon."
How many illustrations are included? Is it every other page, only select scenes, etc.? And are there spot illustrations or are they all full-page?
Around 20. These are full page drawings.
How do you choose which scenes to illustrate, and how do you determine how much story to pack into each single image?
I just picked out scenes that really resonated to me. You really can't put too much into a book illustration. You have to pick a moment in time to freeze frame. If you try to put in every little nuance, you lose the power of the image in minutia.
From a character design standpoint, how do you go about working through what Huck and Jim look like, how they move, etc.?
Being a young southern kid in the late '70s, I'm familiar with the look of poor, dirty children. I think I can do a decent representation of Huck. But I'm going more for establishing atmosphere than to painstakingly point out how the characters should look. I want to evoke the feeling of a riverbank rather than draw a historically accurate riverboat that shows off how good I use photo reference.

A 7 Year Old Weighs in on the New Starfire

"What about this Starfire? What do you think about her?" (Referring to image from DC's reboot Red Hood and the Outsiders)
"I can see almost all of her boobs."
"And?"
"Well she is on the beach in her bikini. But…"
"But?"
"But, she's not relaxing or swimming. She's just posing a lot." *my daughter appears uncomfortable*
"Anything else?"
"Well, she's not fighting anyone. And not talking to anyone really. She's just almost naked and posing."

Brian Wood to Marvel

Marvel released a teaser at Fan Expo Canada indicating writer Brian Wood picking up work at marvel. This comes at a crossroads in Wood’s career, with Northlanders being canceled, and his apparent drop from the Supergirl book. It’s fairly clear DC don’t won’t him, which boggles my mind. If Marvel are smart, however, they can use him to great effect. Here’s how.
